Apple has discontinued their 24-inch and 30-inch monitors last year. Now they only sell an elegant 27-inch monitor. A 27-inch monitor "with a cinematic 16:9 aspect ratio and an astonishing 2560-by-1440 resolution." Basically, a beautiful HD TV.
Apple has just announced that they will are going to eliminate retail box software inventory. That makes complete sense with the release of the Mac App Store. Why waste inventory space with retail boxes that are now virtually obsolete for software? But what will fill all that new wall space at the Apple Store?
Steve Jobs has repeatedly referred to the Apple TV box as a "hobby." It's totally functional and simple right now with access to some on-demand media, Netflix, podcasts, and a few other minor functions. I keep hearing that we're going to have apps on our Apple TV, but haven't gotten a taste of it yet. Would it make more sense to have a full-featured Apple TV that has a bit more processing power and memory for all those apps they will want to sell us?
And of course Apple's design philosophy is minimal and elegant. Why have a stand-alone box, when it could be a part of the TV? Now that would be slick.
Maybe this is just plain obvious. Maybe there are rumors already floating around out there about this and I just haven't heard them. But I'd be willing to bet on an Apple TV like the one I'm describing to drop by next year as media and the Internet continue their inevitable convergence.

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't count on this from apple. If it does, its just an over-sized, over priced, but relatively small computer. I do see them getting into the TV market more, but integrating the components of a TV and the monitor itself sounds great on the surface, but it may not be wise in the long run for the living room. What happens when something new comes along? Id rather get a new $99 box and keep my TV for a lot longer time. Check this article out for reference: http://gizmodo.com/#!5728167/i-just-want-a-dumb-tv
ReplyDelete[...] The Next Apple TV is Going to Be the “Big” One I think we’re going to be in for a big announcement from Apple soon… not the iPad 2 in the next few weeks or the iPhone 5 in June. I think the next really big announcement is going to be the Apple TV. When I say Apple TV, I mean a television set made by Apple and not a stand-alone box — basically a media computer that looks like and is marketed as a TV. And here’s why. [...]
